Andrew Mellen (a.k.a. Virgoman;) is one of my favorite professional organizers and I was thrilled to see him as a recent guest on the Nate Berkus Show where he was helping one guest organize her closet:
Andrew sums up the process of organizing your closets in three easy steps ;)
- Empty: take everything out of the closet.
- Sort: into like components and make decisions (ruthless editing)
- Reload: location, location, location...most frequently used/worn items in the front (or the easiest places to find/get them).
How cool is it that I also used the exact same process when I recently organized my {almost} custom closet a few weeks ago.
1. I Emptied: oh yeah I gutted it down to the bare walls and even removed the racks ;)
2. I Sorted: all of my clothes, purses, shoes, scarves, ties, belts, underwear, sweaters, etc. AND I did some ruthless editing...remember my 43 bag purge ;)
3. I reloaded: by placing our pants on the bottom rack and our shirts on the top rack...and all of the other items in labeled baskets ;)
Just goes to show you...great organized minds think alike! Andrew's site is full of information on Creating Order out of Chaos and if you'd like to read more tips on organizing your closets then be sure to read VirgoMan's Top 10 Closet Do's & Don'ts.
If you are feeling stuck...then you might want to check out his book Unstuff Your Life! For me the best motivation is...just do it! Don't think about it...because then you will talk yourself right out of doing it. You have to start somewhere...so start here...with Andrew's 3-Easy Steps.
It doesn't have to be a closet...just use these 3-Easy Steps and tackle a junk drawer; under the kitchen sink, your sock drawers...whatever...just do it!
Fondly, Roberta
Right now I'm helping Don build a deck...lol...I'm his "son" when these projects come up but usually I came up with the needed improvement. I'm getting ready to cull through a few of my 15 cookbooks and "just do it". Great post.

It's so much easier when you are purging to take everything out and sort through it...but, if your like me you just put it all back but neater than they were before...LOL!!
