Last week for Works-for-Me WEDNESDAY, Kristen was asking for ideas for Valentines Day and at the time I really didn't have anything planned. That is until I read Sara post on Our Best Bites for these ridiculously simple...yet oh so sophisticated Sweetie Pie Pops ;)
Sara is a grand cook and she even makes her own pie crust and filling...but I opted for the KISS method...you know...Keep It Simple Sweetie!
The only thing that I had to do was go out and buy the cookie/craft sticks and a heart cookie cutter at my local craft store...the rest of the ingredients I already had on hand:
- 1 Package Refrigerated Pie Crust Mix
- 1 Can Pie Filling (what ever your favorite flavor is ;)
- 12-15 Cookie/Craft Sticks
- 1 Cookie Cutter (either a heart or round shape works fine)
First things first...bring your dough to room temperature according to the package directions. Then lightly flour your counter or board and roll out one of the pie crusts and cut out 12-15 shapes. Place these "bottoms" onto your pans.
Next place a teaspoon of filling onto each shape...being careful to follow Sara's instructions and NOT put too much filling that will ONLY squirt out when you try to press the seams closed ;)
Next you will want to press your sticks into the center of your shape and as far up to the tops of the shape as possible...without hindering your ability to press close the top of your pies.
Then you will roll out the second pie crust and cut out your next batch of shapes for the tops of your pieces. Using a small dish of water, wet a pastry brush or your fingertips and apply water to the edges of the bottoms and the tops of your pie crust. Place the top crusts on and press closed with a fork to seal the edges.
Now they are ready to go into a 375 degree, pre-heated oven for 15-20 minutes (depending on your pie crust recipe, the size of your pies and the amount of filling used ;) until they are golden brown and bubbly. I would also suggest that you place your sticks down FIRST, before you add your filling...otherwise you might do like I did and forget your sticks all-together...lol
Once they are done, let them completely cool before you apply the glaze...cause you want it to stick and stay on dontcha?
For 12 pies you need the following:
- 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
- 1 tablespoon Butter, melted
- 1-3 tsp. milk
Whisk all ingredients until smooth, adding the milk until desired consistency is reached.
Dip the puffy side of your pies into the glaze and rest on a rack to cool and harden the glaze.
If you are in a hurry or {impatient ;} you can set your pan in the refrigerator to firm up the glaze. Once the glaze is set, then you are ready to wrap up your individual pies. I found my wrappers at the craft store when I bought the cookie sticks...so sweet for Valentines Day!
Then adding the sweet tags that Sara has provided lets your Valentine's know what kind of treat they are in for. Be sure to thank Sara for making these tags for us all to enjoy and let her know that Roberta sentcha! After the first one, I think I needed a BIGGER cookie cutter, because my boys gobbled them down in like two bites...lol
Mitchell...my Sweetie Pie ;)
Sweetie Pie Pops...keeping them simple...Works-for-Me this Valentines Day!
How about you...what works for you? Inquiring minds want to know...
I was going to do these with my kids, but since they are a little tricky to assemble I think I'll just stick with sugar cookies this year. To bad Carl doesn't like Cherries or I'd make them for him,

Those look really YUMMY!!! And, you never disappoint me when I need a laugh...love the cookie without the stick..Maybe next time you feed them hearty boys...skipping the sticks might be a good idea ;-)
