the power of ONE...don't under-estimate yourself...
Emma Blackford, an 8th grader in Nashville, TN sure as heck doesn't. Read her letter here to Subway Restaurants and then go sign her petition...I did ;)
Open Letter to Subway Restaurants:
Dear Subway,
My name is Emma Blackford. I’m in the 8th grade, and I live in Nashville TN. I love eating at Subway… there’s one pretty close to my house, so my family and I walk there to eat every once in a while. The last time we ate lunch there I noticed something — with every sandwich you get a plastic bag to hold it in, but if you’re eating there, you just sit down, take off the bag, and throw it away! There’s no use for giving out plastic for it just to be immediately thrown out! That’s why I think Subway should switch to giving out paper bags, or encourage people by taking 10 cents off their purchase to not take a bag at all! It would help the environment, and if you do get takeout, you can recycle them when you get home!
Plastic is super bad for the environment. It never actually decomposes fully; it just breaks down into smaller pieces and ends up polluting our earth and our oceans. All of our plastic, and Subway bags, eventually make their way to the middle of the Pacific Ocean that hardly anyone ever crosses. It’s a very unusual spot where currents and heated air turn clockwise into the center creating something known as the sub-tropical gyre. This is where a lot of plastic goes, and it ends up just swirling around in this huge gyre, never going away.
So, please consider my idea. It would be a huge step to making the world a better place for future generations. Our ocean would be cleaner, and there wouldn’t be as many sea animals dying everyday by getting caught in our plastic. I really hope you think about this letter and see how it would make a difference. Thank you.

I signed the petition adn as I stated in the petition - I just ate there last week and thought the exact same thing - why plastic at all? Paper is reusable and will break down to the barest element where plastic will not - and it won't end up in our oceans to wreak further havoc on our environment. Great blog, thanks for posting and providing the link. I'm 99.9% sure that Subway will respond in a positive manner!
